Natural Egg Dye

We are always looking for some fun and safe activities for our little ones.  With multiple food allergies and sensitivities in our home, we try to keep everything as natural as possible from the products we use to the food we eat.  Coloring Easter eggs is no exception.  

A lot of people look at the hard eggshell and don't realize that it is semi-permeable.  This means that air and moisture can pass through its tiny pores.  This also means that everything you put on the eggshell may also go inside and be part of the egg you will eventually eat.

Luckily, there are now multiple companies manufacturing natural egg dying kits.  As a busy mom, I often find myself doing things last minute and this year's egg dying fun was no exception.  With no time to purchase a natural kit online, I had to improvise and luckily there are many natural and easy alternatives. 

With only brown eggs from a local farm in our refrigerator, we decided to go with some darker dyes.  To make the project a little more interesting, we had the children color the hard-boiled eggs with some of our white Honeysticks Crayons before we dropped them in the egg dye.

Here are the three egg colors we tried using - Blueberries, Beets, and Wild Berry Zinger tea bags by Celestial Seasonings.  To make the dies, we just put the ingredient in a pot, covered with water, brought up to a boil, and simmered for about 40 minutes.  Once finished, we strained the liquids and put them in some jars we had available (jars shown are Fermentor jars by Family Ferments  Any bowl or container would work fine.

Simply leave the eggs in the dying liquid until the desired color is reached.  With brown eggs we left them in for many hours but white eggs would likely be much quicker.

Here was the finished result!  For our first time experimenting with food dyes, we were very happy with the outcome and so were the kids.  Maybe next year I will be a little more prepared and try some new colors on white eggs:)
